Reading into the lives of children…

One of the greatest gifts we can give a child is a love of reading, and it is never too early to begin.

From small beginnings in the spring of 2012, our Mountain Reader program has now grown to more than 20 volunteers who generously give of their time to read to individual BES students. Thanks to the leadership and efforts of our parent organizers and Parent Council team, almost all of our classes have at least one volunteer reading with children weekly! With the support of local employers, many of the volunteers come during their work day, taking time out to make contributions to a child’s learning – and life.

The results of the reading program have been significant and immediate. Reading experts suggest that having children read to adults, and adults read to children, is an important aspect of learning to read. The Mountain Reader program is a great example of school and community sharing leadership and responsibility in educating our children and, perhaps more importantly, allowing students to practice reading skills learned in class while having fun.
