Banff Elementary School Email Updates en-us Thu, 21 Feb 2019 07:22:19 MST Breeze for Teachers 5.0 https://bes.crps.ca February 15, 2019 : BES Hoodies, Ecosonic Playground Project, Camera Club, Alberta Education Accountability Survey Spotlight on Learning BES students were treated to the musical, Pier 21 on Thursday. Pier 21 played an important role in Canadian history, and connects to Social Studies outcomes. The Halifax warehouse welcomed over a million immigrants to Canada, including newcomers, refugees, war-brides, orphans, and Canadian soldiers returning from World War 2. Did you know long time resident, Dorothy Carleton, was a war bride who came through Pier 21? Thank you to our Gr. 7 photography students for the photos. School Closed February 18-20 Family Day Holiday / School Closure February 21-22 Teacher Convention - no classes for students BES Hoodies We are excited to introduce our new school logo that has been created by Jason Carter. Our school has worked with the celebrated Canadian artist to redesign our school bear in order to represent a school with students aged Kindergarten to Grade 8. We believe that our logo continues to represent the beliefs held in our “CUBS” code, while adjusting to the needs of our older students. In order to celebrate our school culture, we are now selling hoodies with our new logo. Hoodies will be sold for $40. If you are interested in purchasing a hoodie for your child, please click here for the order form and send it along with cash or a cheque payable to Banff Elementary School to the office by Friday March 8, 2019. If required, paper copies are available at the office. Please note, BES must place an order for a minimum of 40 hoodies. Ecosonic Playground Project - Donations Needed The Grade 5's will be beginning a very special STEAM pilot project called the Ecosonic Playground Project in conjunction with Exshaw school and a professor of music from U. of Massachusetts Lowell in March. As this project highlights the use of recyclable materials in its focus and design, we are asking the community (and you!) to donate reusable items for our structure. The items we are asking for need to be weatherproof, durable, have the potential to create pitch and must be sized to fit on or in the PVC piping structure dimensions. Items such as plastic buckets, metal items such as chains, baking pans and grates (kitchen items), bungee cords, rubber tubing and bands (fitness bands), broken instruments or pieces that are weatherproof (metal or wood), and sports items like rackets, poles. Recyclable materials that can be used to create mallet-type objects or to attach or secure objects to the structure are also welcomed. Please click here for more information about this project. Any materials you are willing to donate can be dropped off at the BES music room over the next few weeks. Camera Club - Invitation for a Family Portrait Our Camera Club students would like to invite you to our first annual Family Portrait fundraiser. The event will take place during our Parent-Teacher conferences next month in the Learning Commons. This fundraiser will allow us to purchase more gear to enrich our program. There is no set fee, by donation only. No bookings needed, just drop in with your family! BES was one of 800 organizations (over 100,00 individuals) in Alberta that took part last year!  We will be walking around the old building between 8:25am and 8:35am on Wednesday, Feb 6th. Please come and join us! Traffic Safety Student safety to and from school is equal to safety at school. We hope we can all agree as a community that close calls require a sense of urgency to ensuring the safest environment for our children and community members. Some reminders: Big Horn Street: Big Horn is the main access route for the construction vehicles.  Parking is restricted on this street. Please ensure your child is safe when picking up or dropping off on this road.Squirrel Street: Drop off and pick up only in designated areas (no parking in the bus zone). Children are expected to use the crosswalk in front of the main entrance or at a street corner. Blocking traffic by double parking and turning around using driveways causes congestion and a safety issue. Always pick up and drop off your children in designated areas and please respect our neighbours’ driveways.   Word Smash Conference The Word Smash - Inspiring Young Writers Conference is a full day conference being held on May 21, 2019 that calls on local authors and illustrators to present their craft while inspiring our young writers to develop their own skills and abilities. The Banff Centre has generously provided us with the Kinnear Centre for our venue which will host all 8 of our local authors. Students rotate through 5 workshops that vary between different styles of writing and illustrating. The directive of the Conference is to provide Division 2-4 students at CRPS expert exposure to local authors and illustrators in a professional world class facility and the opportunity to write.
