Spotlight on Learning
Welcome back to BES!  We are so thrilled to be starting another exciting year with your children.  We all have many things to look forward to this year, including playgrounds, fields, and let’s not forget learning cool things too! Our Family Potluck & BBQ is Wednesday, September 11 from 5:00-6:00 pm. Our Grand Opening is Monday, September 16 at 2:00 pm.  We hope to see you there!

Full Day Friday
Friday, September 13
Full day of school (8:30 - 3:05) Grades 1 - 8 (No Kindergarten this day)

Lunch Program
School Council is thrilled to continue our lunch days program. The first lunch session will run from October 1 - January 30. Watch for more details on placing your order. This program is a fundraiser for School Council and provides the opportunity for parents to buy nutritious and appetizing lunches for their children on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a purely volunteer run program.  We are in need of volunteers. Please contact our volunteer coordinator Gabby DeBaie at to volunteer. You can also sign up on the MunchaLunch website when completing your child's order.  We cannot run the program without the help of volunteers.

School Fees
School fees are not yet finalized; however they will start to appear on Parent Portal as we work on the fees. Payment is not due until an invoice for extra curricular fees and lunch supervision is sent home later this month. Payment options and details will be provided at that time.

Parking & Pick-up/Drop-off

  • Big Horn Street construction and landscaping should be completed by the end of next week. There will be parking, a Kiss & Go zone (in front of the garbage/recycling shed), a handicap zone and a 5 minute parking zone on the school side (East side) of Big Horn once the trees and shrubs have been planted. There will be no stopping or parking on the West side of the street beginning mid September.

  • The new Banff train station lot is now open. If you park towards the end of the lot, there is a path beside the daycare that leads directly to BES, complete with a crosswalk where Moose and Big Horn meet.

  • Thank you all for your flexibility with the Squirrel Street closure - Volunteers needed!  *We are in need of parents to put out the barricades in the morning and again at 2:40.  Are there parents who arrive around 8am for Before School Care and early for pick-up who could help with this?  Ideally, we could set up a schedule where ten parents each do one day each week. Please contact Ms. McKibbin at if you are able to assist us.

400 bike racks will be arriving in a month! In the meantime, please lock student bikes to the racks at the front of the school. Students can also lock bikes to the permanent fence on Moose Street so long as they are not blocking the gates to the field. Please encourage your child(ren) to be caring when parking bikes around our new landscaping.

Need a bike?

The Banff Fire Department donated a brand new bike for a student without a bike. Please contact the school office if your child needs a bike.

School Entrances for Students

  • Kindergarten students will use the Big Horn doors

  • Grade 2, 7 & 8 students will use the doors facing Elk Street, entering via the sidewalk off of Big Horn

  • Grade 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6 students will use the main entrance for the moment

Old School & Playground Update
The old school demolition should be completed within the next two weeks. Removal of the materials will continue throughout September. Playground components are being delivered towards the end of September, with completion by the end of October.  This timing should work well with the grading and reclamation of the south field happening simultaneously.

Before School Care
Juggling work and family can be challenging. We at Banff Elementary School would like to support families by offering before school care starting at 7:30 am. This is a free service for BES families. If your child requires before school care (7:30-8:25 am), please register using the google form on the BES website or click here for the link.

Meet the Staff & Family Potluck BBQ, September 11
BES Staff would like to invite families to join us for a BBQ and potluck the evening of Wednesday, September 11 from 5:00-6:00 pm. We will provide hot dogs and are asking families to bring one dish to share to round out the meal. Please bring plates, cutlery and something to drink (non-alcoholic) for your family.

Grade 7 Leadership Course
Our grade seven students will be participating in an overnight leadership course next week at the Outdoor Learning Centre. Stay tuned for highlights!

Gr. 7/8 Volleyball
Volleyball season begins next week! Coaches are needed. Please contact the School Office if you are interested in coaching.

Outdoor Basketball Net for Sale!
Oops!  We purchased a basketball net for our alcove area, but for safety reasons we are unable to use it. We are wondering if there is a family who would like to purchase for half price and capitalize on our mistake? It is a Spalding 54” Glass Ultimate Hybrid Portable Basketball System - $500 (original price $1000). The money will go towards the playground! Please contact the office if you are interested.  First come, first served!
