‘Growing up Gifted’ Parent Information Session

Canadian Rockies Public Schools is pleased to offer “Growing up Gifted”, a session for parents presented by Krystal Abrahamowicz from The Calgary Regional Consortium. Please join us from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at Banff Elementary School on October 28, 2019.

Having taught in a school for gifted children for over a decade, I thought I knew a gifted kid when I saw one.  There was ‘just something about gifted kids’ that I could spot from a mile away. But, when it came to my own two children, the realization that each of them was gifted was a journey and a lesson. Join me for an engaging and insightful evening where I share my journey of understanding all that I knew about the research on gifted learners through the eyes of a parent, and how I use what the research tells us about the experience of being a gifted child to nurture a strong sense of self and successful home life for my complex children.  You will leave with resources that you can access to support you in parenting high ability children. Through stories that illustrate best practices in research, you will learn about what giftedness is… and what it is not… and how research around topics like perfectionism, asynchrony, twice exceptionality, and the social/emotional experience of giftedness can provide insights into parenting strategies for successful, happy, resilient children.

Krystal Abrahamowicz is a Designer of Professional Learning with the Calgary Regional Consortium.  In this role, she authored the Supporting High School Completion a Tool Kit for Success resource and had a key role in developing the Implementation and Planning Tool in the Government of Alberta Resource Working Together to Support Mental Health in Alberta Schools, as well as the ARPDC Weaving Ways resource which supports teachers in including Indigenous knowledge systems in their practice. Previous to this, she spent over 10 years as a Teacher, Student Services Specialist, and then Student Services Coordinator at Westmount Charter School. With extensive background and training in gifted education, and many years of experience in designing support plans for diverse learners, Krystal is a passionate believer that every student can experience success at school.
