E-NEWS & Principal's Post

Our volleyball season is in full swing! Our teams have been working hard and each player continues to improve each day. We hosted our first Grade 7 Girls Mini Tournament yesterday.  All players showed sportsmanship and were cheered on by many fans. Well done girls! A huge thank you to our coaches - Mr. Weller, Mr. Mannix, Ms. Flores, Ms. Mayne and Ms. Grant. We appreciate you volunteering your time to coach our students at BES!

We are excited about continuing our professional learning this Friday afternoon. Our Kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers will be exploring more strategies to support their literacy teaching. They will also be looking at a new resource for their English Language Arts planning. Our Grade 4 - 8 teachers will be working with Kim Tackaberry from the Alberta Professional Learning Consortium to explore a brand new resource available to support literacy intervention in our upper grades.

Have you considered joining a School Council meeting? We would love to have you join us on Wednesday October 23 at 3:30 pm for our next meeting. We discuss things happening at BES and look to gather parent input around activities we can offer our families to increase engagement. Our School Council also supports student success through their initiatives. We would love to have you join us!  Thank you to our School Council and parent volunteers for coordinating our first Hot Lunch!

Grade 1s have been practicing "quick writes." After reading the book The Buddy Bench, they wrote messages of kindness and belonging and left them on our school's Buddy Bench. Hopefully, this brought a smile to students' faces and reminded everyone that we all belong!

Grade 5N has been learning about Place Value and decimals/fractions through hands-on learning with LICORICE. We took a WHOLE piece of licorice and cut it into TENTHS. We then took the tenth piece and cut it into HUNDREDTHS. And finally (and unbelievably) we took the hundredths piece and cut it into THOUSANDTHS. This gave us a more concrete visualization of parts of a whole, and was a tasty experience too!

Volunteering
Banff Elementary School loves and greatly appreciates our volunteers! We require all volunteers who help in the school or on field trips to complete a Criminal Record Check through the RCMP and sign a Confidentiality Contract as per Canadian Rockies Public Schools’ Administrative Procedure 490 - School Volunteers and FOIPP. RCMP checks expire one year from the issue date. Prior to volunteering, please email your legal name to the school office at bes.info@crps.ca to request an RCMP Fee Waiver Letter and we will email you back the letter, required forms, and instructions. Often Criminal Record Checks can be completed by the RCMP within 24 hours. Please click here for more information on volunteering opportunities.

Before School Care
Before School Care is being offered at no cost to families in need of childcare before school to enable parents to get to work on time. Before School Care will commence Tuesday September 3, 2024 and registration is required each year. It is available between 7:45 - 8:15 am. Please click here to register your child. Students who arrive at 8:15 do not need to register for the Before School Care Program.

School Fees
For the third year, the CRPS board has decided not to charge lunchroom supervision fees for the 2024-2025 school year, reflecting our division's commitment to easing family financial pressures. Complimentary (CTF) course fees for Grades 7 and 8 students have been added to your Parent Portal account and are due by October 31, 2024. You can pay school fees online and obtain a copy of your invoice through your Power School Parent Portal account. Once you sign on, under navigation, click on Student Fees. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office.
