E-NEWS & Principal's Post

We were thrilled to host the CRPS Board Meeting and our School Council Meeting at BES this past week. A major highlight for us was getting to tour our Trustees and School Council members through our new Maker Space. CRPS and our School Council generously funded this project and provided over $20,000 for the purchase of equipment and furniture. A huge thank you to them for their generosity and to Mr. Weller who spent many hours planning, purchasing and setting up the space. Our Grade 7 and 8 students will have access to this space in the new year and will explore 3D printing, robotics and photography/videography. What a fabulous addition to our school!

Some parents have been parking in these spaces, especially during pick up times, and some of our parents who require these spaces have not been able to access them. Thank you for working with us to keep the spaces available for those with a pass. Please click here to review all our Safety While Traveling To and From School information.

Kindergarten has been looking into trying a learning task in the style of “Building Thinking Classrooms”, which is an approach we have been trying at BES to encourage collaboration and engagement. Kindergarten refers to this style of learning as “Thinking on our Feet.”  Our first task was thinking about the number of vehicles we would need to have a total of 7 wheels - this connected to our focus on transportation and put our numeracy skills to work. Kindergarten has also jumped into the BES Food Drive challenge! In our talks about being part of a community, we want to be leaders in encouraging families to participate in this endeavour.

UFLI Home Practice Video This link takes you to a video that shows how parents can help their children with reading at home. It is part of the UFLI Home Practice program, which teaches simple and clear ways to help kids become better readers. IF you see this sheet come home, here is how you can help!
The video shows:

  • How to support your child to read words step by step.
  • How to support your child to write words
  • How to support your child to do word work

CRPS Shared Vision of Learning
This week’s highlight of the CRPS Shared Vision of Learning and how it is coming to life at BES is the following belief:
We believe that diversity of experiences and connections in nature and community enhance learning beyond the classroom. As learners, we:

  • collaborate to create and honour relationships with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, Elders and other community experts to provide authentic learning experiences.
  • design experiential learning opportunities and environments that authentically engage and stretch learners.

We are very fortunate at CRPS to have access to wonderful Knowledge Keepers from Mînî Thnî to help students develop their foundational knowledge around First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives and understanding.  This year, the Knowledge Keepers have visited our Kindergarten and Grade 7 classes.  They have shared stories about the Banff area, taught students some words and numbers in Stoney, and also shared knowledge around residential schools.  We also hosted a wonderful assembly to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  This is a valuable partnership and opportunity for our students and we are excited to have our Knowledge Keepers joining us each month this school year.

Did you happen to see our BES Highlight on the CRPS website??  We had a wonderful write up about our Mountain Living program which includes Nature Explorers and our Outdoor Pursuits.  This is an excellent example of how we provide opportunities for our students to connect in nature and in our community to enhance learning and make it engaging and real for students.  You can find the article here:  BES Mountain Living Program

BES Emergency Secure and Hold and Lockdown Procedures/Practice Drills are scheduled for the upcoming week. At Banff Elementary School, the safety of students and staff is our most important priority. Emergencies requiring Hold and Secure or Lockdown are rare, but it is the duty of a school to prepare students and have them practice what to do in case of all types of emergencies. Banff Elementary School will conduct emergency practice drills for both a Hold and Secure and Lockdown during the course of the year:

Monday December 2 at 9:00 am - Secure and Hold Practice Drill
Tuesday December 3 at 9:45 am - Lockdown Practice Drill

The purpose of these drills is to practice response behaviours to protect students and staff.

Secure and Hold

Lockdown

    • an upset, violent or abusive person is in the school, need to limit exposure of students to the event

    • wildlife threat on the field
  • when there is an imminent threat
    • threatens the safety of students

Volunteering
Banff Elementary School loves and greatly appreciates our volunteers! We require all volunteers who help in the school or on field trips to complete a Criminal Record Check through the RCMP and sign a Confidentiality Contract as per Canadian Rockies Public Schools’ Administrative Procedure 490 - School Volunteers and FOIPP. RCMP checks expire one year from the issue date. Prior to volunteering, please email your legal name to the school office at bes.info@crps.ca to request an RCMP Fee Waiver Letter and we will email you back the letter, required forms, and instructions. Often Criminal Record Checks can be completed by the RCMP within 24 hours. Please click here for more information on volunteering opportunities.

School Fees
For the third year, the CRPS board has decided not to charge lunchroom supervision fees for the 2024-2025 school year, reflecting our division's commitment to easing family financial pressures. Complimentary (CTF) course fees for Grades 7 and 8 students have been added to your Parent Portal account and are due by October 31, 2024. You can pay school fees online and obtain a copy of your invoice through your Power School Parent Portal account. Once you sign on, under navigation, click on Student Fees. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office.
