Students in Grade 8 explored the viscosity and flow rate of different liquids by having a race to see which flowed the fastest. Students then used data from 3 trials to calculate the average flow rate and help them compare the viscosity (thickness) of different liquids. What we discovered is that the flow rate of ketchup and thick paint was so slow that we ran out of time before it flowed 10 cm and that water flowed so quickly that it took a few tries to time it accurately! The Grade 8s did a great job making sure that they were keeping variables other than liquid controlled, so that their results were consistent and as accurate as possible.
